The Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC) is a voluntary partnership program that encourages federal facilities and agencies to:
- Purchase greener electronic products.
- Reduce impacts of electronic products during use.
- Manage obsolete electronics in an environmentally safe way.
Federal agencies and facilities participate as Partners in the program. The FEC provides:
- Resources and technical assistance for improving electronics management practices.
- Educational opportunities through monthly conference calls and annual conference.
- Networking opportunities through an electronic listserve and mentoring program.
- Annual recognition to Facility Partners that have achieved specific goals.
The FEC assists Federal agencies and their facilities in meeting the electronics stewardship requirements of Executive Order 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management. In particular, the Instructions for Implementing E.O. 13423 state that
“each agency and its facilities shall choose either to become a partner in the FEC, or to implement an equivalent electronics stewardship program.”
