Social Security Administration Annex
Baltimore, Maryland

Sustainable Features

Conservation of Materials and Resources

The SSA Annex Project Team employed a stringent waste reduction/prevention program for building elements and construction materials. The contract for the renovation of this facility included such waste prevention measures as recycling, reclamation, or reuse of all recyclable materials such as aluminum, steel, copper, ballast, granite, marble and masonry. By opting to reuse both the existing building shell and interior features, and through employing aggressive recycling/salvage tactics for construction materials, the team was able to reuse 77% of the building's exterior, 76% of the interior, and recycle/salvage 79% of construction materials, preventing 4,133 out of 5,239 tons from going to landfill.

Energy Efficiency

During the design of the renovation, the project team developed seven strategies that resulted in significant energy savings. These were:

  • improved shell construction;
  • utilization of low temperature air supply;
  • addition of economizers;
  • allowance for air temperature reset;
  • increased lighting performance;
  • heightened motor efficiencies; and
  • employment of thermal energy storage.

The utilization of these strategies resulted in a total energy savings of 12% below the ASHRAE 90.1-1999 baseline model.

Enhancement of Indoor Environmental Quality

The team also took aggressive measures to improve the facility's indoor air quality. The installation of a new air ventilation system meeting the requirements of ASHRAE62-1999 as stated in the Ventilation Rate Procedure, Critical Air Fraction Method, prevented the development of indoor air quality problems in the building, maintaining the health and well-being of the occupants.
