Innovative Federal Pollution Prevention Partnership Recognized

On September 18, in the Senate Hart Office Building, the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable presented their 2002 Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Awards to twelve organizations for their innovative P2 work.

The National Park Service's Intermountain Region and the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 8 were recognized for their strong environmental leadership and partnership. Together, these two agencies have provided training, technology, and tools to 81 parks in the Intermountain Region. The parks are using these resources to go beyond compliance and create sustainable park environments. Several parks have adopted environmental management systems, with many adopting pollution prevention programs that already have made significant reductions.

John Howard, the Federal Environmental Executive, assisted in handing out the awards:

Tonight, I'm proud to be here with you to recognize your great work as some of America's leading environmental stewards. I was so impressed with the work of all the applicants - across the country, big and small, government and private and nonprofit - for their innovation, and results, and commitment - for their stewardship.

I was particularly impressed in reading the applications - remembering that the federal government is working to increase its use of robust environmental management systems - to see so many applicants and winners - yes, I believe there is a connection - using environmental management systems.
He noted that President Bush had sent his greetings and congratulations for a successful National Pollution Prevention Week, and quoted from the President's letter:

By preventing pollution, we make our communities more livable, our businesses more competitive, and our world a cleaner place for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.
