Eliminating Mercury-containing Products The National Institutes of Health instituted a campaign to eliminate mercury-containing products and to handle remaining mercury more carefully. The "Mad as a Hatter Campaign for a Mercury Free NIH" is educating NIH employees and students to remove mercury from the environment. This campaign can be duplicated by any agency; information can be found at http://orf.od.nih.gov/Environmental+Protection/Mercury+Free/. The following link is a directory of some existing waste
exchanges. Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, AZ targeted mercury from the base dental clinics for reduction or elimination. The base installed a dental mercury recovery system to capture 99 percent of the fine mercury particles generated in clinics; the particles are then recycled.
