Innovative Use of Renewable Energy The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen in Puerto Rico has rethought its actions to solve a traffic problem. One part of the facility’s perimeter located on a dangerous curve was hit by unwary drivers. Through discussions and partnership with the local government, it was determined that greater traffic lighting would help. Because the location was remote from existing electrical supply, the air station needed to install a generator . Instead of a gasoline or diesel-powered generator, the air station opted to purchase a solar-powered lighting unit. This purchase has provided a savings by eliminating accidents and adding no additional air emissions or fuel costs. It has been virtually maintenance free.
